Selling on Takealot, done properly.
Takealot puts you in front of shoppers who are already buying. It also takes a commission and owns the customer. Here is how to get listed, and when it pays.
Getting listedWhat you need before you apply.
Sellers apply through the Takealot seller portal. Approval and category access depend on what you sell, and some categories have extra requirements. Before you apply, get these in order:
- 01
A clean product catalogue
Accurate titles, descriptions, dimensions and weights for every product.
- 02
Barcodes
Takealot lists products by barcode, so your products need valid barcodes (GTIN or EAN).
- 03
Good images
Clear, consistent product photos that meet the marketplace image rules.
- 04
Stock and fulfilment
A plan for fulfilling orders yourself or sending stock to Takealot, and the capacity to keep stock counts accurate.
What it costsCommission, fulfilment and the rest.
Marketplaces charge in layers: a commission that depends on your category, fees for fulfilment and storage if Takealot handles your stock, and the cost of advertising to stand out in search. Those layers change, so do not guess.
Our fee calculator keeps the current figures for Takealot next to Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon and Makro. Put in your monthly sales and average order value and see what each channel costs you, in rand and as a share of sales.
When it paysMarketplace for reach, store for margin.
A marketplace gives you shoppers without the cost of finding them. Your own store gives you better margin, your brand, your prices and your customer list. Most brands need both, working together instead of competing.
- 01
Use Takealot to be found
Reach people who search the marketplace and have never heard of you.
- 02
Use your store to build the brand
Sell again to the people who already bought, through email, SMS and offers you control.
- 03
Keep the numbers honest
Compare each channel after fees and ad spend, and move budget to the one that earns you the most profit.

By running both from one product and stock source. We connect the channels so a sale on one updates the other, with monitoring for failures.
