Migration guideFrom Takealot to your own store.

Keep selling on Takealot, and build a store where you keep the customer and more of the margin.

Takealot brings shoppers, but the customer relationship stays with the marketplace and every sale pays fees. Your own store lets you build a list, set your own promotions and sell what doesn’t fit the marketplace.

Most sellers run both. This is how to add your own store without running out of stock or time.

Step by stepSeven steps.

  1. 01

    Work out the numbers

Compare what Takealot costs you per sale with your own store: platform, payment gateway, delivery and marketing. Our platform fee calculator puts them side by side.

  2. 02

Pick a platform and a domain

Shopify if you want it simple and hosted, WooCommerce if you want full control. Register your .co.za in your company’s name.

  3. 03

    Bring your own product content

Use your own photos and descriptions, written for your brand. Add what a marketplace page leaves out: your story, sizing help, care, and reviews.

  4. 04

    Payments and delivery

A local payment gateway, and couriers or pickup points such as The Courier Guy, Pargo, PAXI or Bob Go. Show delivery costs and times before checkout.

  5. 05

    Keep stock in step

Stock in Takealot’s warehouses fills Takealot orders. Keep your own-store stock in hand, and sync levels with an inventory tool or Takealot’s seller API so you never sell what you don’t have.

  6. 06

    Bring people to your store

Search, social, WhatsApp and email. Point your social profiles to your site, and check Takealot’s seller rules before putting anything in marketplace orders.

  7. 07

    Get the legal basics right

Your own store needs what the marketplace handled for you: your business details on the site as the ECT Act requires, a returns policy, a privacy policy and POPIA consent for marketing.

  • Generally yes. Check your Takealot seller agreement for any rules on pricing or listings.

  • It doesn’t have to be. You can keep prices the same and give people a reason to buy direct: bundles, free delivery over an amount, loyalty or products only you sell.

  • Shopify is quicker to run, with costs in dollars and an extra fee per sale with a local gateway. WooCommerce has no platform fee but needs hosting and more upkeep. Our platform fee calculator compares them at your sales.
