If there’s one app on almost every phone in South Africa, it’s WhatsApp. People use it to talk to family, organise their week and, more and more, to buy things. For brands, that makes WhatsApp one of the most personal sales channels there is.
Here’s how to sell well in the chat.
Why WhatsApp works for commerce
- It’s where your customers already are. No new app to download, no account to create.
- It feels personal. A reply from a real person, in the same place they talk to friends, builds trust fast.
- It works on any budget of data. It’s light, familiar and forgiving on slower connections.
The tools
WhatsApp Business app. Free, and built for small businesses. You get a business profile, a product catalogue, quick replies, labels to organise chats and automatic greeting and away messages. It’s the best place to start.
WhatsApp Business Platform. For bigger brands and higher volumes. It connects WhatsApp to your store, CRM and support tools, so several people can answer chats, and messages like order updates can be sent automatically. It’s usually set up through an approved provider, and messages are charged by conversation type.
Click-to-WhatsApp ads. Ads on Facebook and Instagram that open a WhatsApp chat instead of a website, useful for products people like to ask about before they buy.
Five ways to sell in the chat
- Build your catalogue. Add your best sellers with good photos, prices and short descriptions, so customers can browse without leaving the chat.
- Reply fast. Speed is the whole point. Set expectations with an away message, and use quick replies for the questions you get every day.
- Make paying easy. Send a payment link so customers can pay by card or instant EFT without leaving the conversation.
- Send useful updates. Order confirmations, delivery updates and back-in-stock alerts are messages people actually want.
- Link it to your store. Add a WhatsApp button to your product pages, so shoppers with a question can ask instead of leaving.
What not to do
- Don’t spam. Only message people who have agreed to hear from you, and make it easy to stop. It’s the law under POPIA, and it’s the fastest way to get blocked.
- Don’t go silent. A chat left unanswered does more damage than having no WhatsApp at all.
- Don’t lose track. Record the orders and questions that come in on WhatsApp, so you know what the channel is really worth.
The bigger picture
WhatsApp works best as part of the journey, not a separate one. A shopper might discover you on Instagram, ask a question on WhatsApp and buy on your website. Make every step feel like the same brand, and each channel makes the others stronger.
