South African ecommerce keeps growing, and it keeps changing shape. Here are seven shifts we’re watching this year, and what they mean for brands selling online.
1. Search is becoming a conversation
Shoppers are starting to ask AI assistants what to buy instead of typing keywords. That rewards brands with clear, detailed and trustworthy product information, and reviews that answer real questions. If a machine can’t understand your product page, it can’t recommend it.
What to do: write product pages that answer questions fully, add structured product data, and keep your prices, stock and delivery information accurate everywhere.
2. Speed is the new standard
On-demand grocery apps like Checkers Sixty60, Pick n Pay asap! and Woolies Dash have changed what South Africans expect from delivery. Not every brand needs to deliver in an hour, but every brand is now compared against fast.
What to do: be clear about delivery times, offer pickup options, and never over-promise.
3. Paying is getting easier
Instant EFT, real-time payments like PayShap, tap-to-pay wallets and buy now, pay later are all making it easier to pay. Shoppers expect their preferred method at checkout.
What to do: review your payment options and show them early, on the product page and in the cart.
4. Retail media grows up
Marketplaces and retailers are selling more advertising on their own sites and apps, backed by their shopper data. For brands that sell through retail, it’s becoming part of the cost of being found.
What to do: get your product listings right first, then test retail media with a fixed budget and measure new sales, not just clicks.
5. Social and chat commerce keep rising
More discovery happens on social video, and more conversations happen on WhatsApp. The line between content, conversation and checkout keeps getting thinner.
What to do: make sure what people see on social matches your product pages, and make it easy to ask a question and buy in the same flow.
6. First-party data matters more
With privacy rules like POPIA and fewer third-party cookies, the data you collect directly, with consent, is becoming one of your most valuable assets.
What to do: give people real reasons to sign up, and use what you learn to make their experience better.
7. Brand is the tiebreaker
When everyone has access to the same platforms, ads and tools, the brands that win are the ones people remember and trust. Performance marketing gets you seen. Brand gets you chosen.
What to do: stop choosing between creative and commercial. Build a brand people want, and a store that makes it easy to buy.
