Ecommerce Ecommerce delivery in South Africa: how to turn shipping into a selling point

Courier handing a parcel out of a delivery van

For online shoppers, delivery is part of the product. How much it costs, how long it takes and how easy it is to return something all shape whether they buy, and whether they buy again. In South Africa, where distances are long and many people aren’t home during the day, getting delivery right is a real competitive advantage.

Start with what shoppers want to know

Before they buy, shoppers want answers to three questions:

  1. How much will delivery cost?
  2. When will it arrive?
  3. What if I need to return it?

Answer all three on the product page and in the cart, not only at checkout. Surprise delivery costs are one of the most common reasons people abandon their carts.

Offer choices

Not everyone wants the same thing. Give shoppers options that fit their lives:

  • Door-to-door courier for convenience. Services like The Courier Guy are widely used by South African stores.
  • Pickup points for shoppers who aren’t home during the day, or who want cheaper delivery. Networks like Pargo and PAXI, at PEP stores, let people collect from a shop near them.
  • Click and collect if you have physical stores.
  • Express or same-day delivery in major cities, for shoppers willing to pay for speed.

Use free delivery wisely

Free delivery works, but it isn’t free for you. Most stores do best with a free-delivery threshold set a little above their average order value. It nudges shoppers to add one more item, which helps cover the cost. Show a progress message in the cart, like “You’re R150 away from free delivery”.

Keep promises you can keep

It’s better to promise three to five working days and deliver in two, than to promise next day and deliver in four. Be clear about cut-off times, delivery to outlying areas and busy periods like Black Friday and December. When there’s a delay, tell customers before they have to ask.

Make tracking easy

Send a tracking link as soon as an order ships, and send updates by email, SMS or WhatsApp. Fewer “where is my order?” messages means happier customers and a less stretched support team.

Turn unboxing into brand

Delivery is the only time your online brand becomes something people can touch. Good packaging, a thank-you note or a small surprise can turn a delivery into a moment people share. It doesn’t have to cost much: care shows.

Make returns simple

A clear, fair returns policy makes people more comfortable buying. Summarise it in one line near the Add to cart button, make the process simple, and use returns data to find sizing, photography or quality problems you can fix.

Where to start

Order from your own store as a customer would, to an address outside the city. Time every step and note every moment of doubt. Then fix the biggest one first. Our free CRO audit also checks how clearly your store communicates delivery and returns.
